Project Overview
This project began when an elderly couple was seeking to downsize from their 4 bedroom two-storey residence. The design brief involved sub-division of their block and the addition of an efficiently planned self-contained dwelling to replace the accumulated clutter of 1970s additions to the rear of the site. The new residence provides the clients with bright sun drenched living areas, excellent ventilation and comfortable access to versatile outdoor entertaining and leisure areas, security, low maintenance finishes and fluid spatial connection throughout.
Two concrete block walls run along either boundary, defining the form of the house and enclosing the interior space in a tough shell. The internal material selection takes advantage of the soft, rich hues and texture of timber, contrasting with the austerity of the carefully laid concrete block, which is left unfinished. Thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship combine in this project to create rich, warm spaces, which celebrate the potential of natural materials in residential construction.
